JUST LIKE HUCK FINN’S BLUES

Sun comes up, are you still dreaming on a riverside?
Lost in some wild reverie in an endless summer sky.
Wake up, the world is calling: the school and mission bells.
Those dusty rooms and sorry eyes – They’re not where you want to be: -
Out where the air is sweet and clean, up river on a ‘Dreamboat Queen’.
Where fairgrounds spin romance of worlds so far away
That chase your blues away.
Night comes down, familiar voices are calling you home,
The lights of town seem so distant here, the stars so bright and clear.
They seem to hold the greater claim on your restless soul.
You hear them whisper: ‘Just run away and never grow old….’
Someone watching these stars like you,
And wishing you might take her too,
Sends up her prayer saying: ‘Don’t let us slip away,
Come chase these blues away’.
But you never saw that look in her eyes.
Everyday you just passed her by -
Now you have your own lessons to learn.
Some hold true for everyone: until you’re special to someone,
You live life just passing through - do only our shared dreams come true?
Another carney with hollow eyes, taking pennies for the rides.
Young girls hug their sweethearts tight screaming laughter through the night.
Tell me what else can you do, but play the hand life’s given you?
The same place we’re going to - just lives and different ways
To chase the blues away.
